Reflection Essay

1. First, clearly summarizeoneof the arguments that the Dalai Lama makes in Ethics for the New Millenium.  Choose any argument, being sure to identify what the Dalai Lama claims and what defense he gives in support of his claim.
2. Next, provide a well-reasoned objection to his argument.  Imagine that the objection is from a critic who respects the Dalai Lama, butthinks there is a significant problem with his argument.
3. Finally, offer a perspective that shows either (a)that the Dalai Lama is correct, in a way that the objector can find illuminating; (b) that the objector is correct, in a way that the Dalai Lama can find illuminating; or (c) that the views of the Dalai Lama and the objector can be integrated, in a way that both the Dalai Lama and the objector can find illuminating.

Format:

1) Your essay should be at least1,000 words in length.  Be sure to note your word count at the top of your essay, in the same area where your name appears.

2) You must draw upon the text in order to compose this essay.  Do not use secondary sources.  Quote and cite, using footnotes (not endnotes, not in-text citations) indicating author(s) and page number(s).  “This sentence,” Foust asserts, “shall serve as an example demonstrating how to do this.”[1] (Footnote = CTRL+ALT+F or Insert > Footnote).  Please lead into quotes with your own words.  Avoid quote-plopping.

3) Please use either 1.5 or double-spacing and please number the pages.

4) Please do not add a cover page or bibliography; they are not necessary.

5) Please print a hard copy (emailed papers will not be accepted).

6) Please do use a stapler (not a paper clip, not folded corners).

Essays are graded on the basis of clarity, comprehension, and persuasiveness.
