Behavior Management Strategies
For this discussion:
• Define the term behavior management.
• Choose two strategies discussed in Chapter 6 to share in this discussion.
 How are they used to support behavior?
 How can they be utilized to support PBIS?
• Support your response with evidence and references in APA 6th edition.
Behavior management refers to the strategies, techniques, and approaches used to promote positive behaviors, address challenging behaviors, and create a supportive and structured environment for individuals. It involves the implementation of interventions that encourage desired behaviors and discourage undesirable behaviors through reinforcement, modeling, and consistent enforcement of rules and expectations.
Two strategies discussed in Chapter 6 that can support behavior management are positive reinforcement and token economy systems.
1. Positive reinforcement involves providing rewards or incentives to individuals for demonstrating positive behaviors. This strategy aims to increase the likelihood of desired behaviors by associating them with pleasurable or rewarding consequences. For example, praising a student for completing their homework on time can reinforce the behavior and motivate them to continue doing so in the future. Positive reinforcement helps to create a supportive and encouraging environment that promotes the development of positive behaviors.
2. Token economy systems involve using tokens or points as a form of currency to reinforce desired behaviors. Participants earn tokens for demonstrating target behaviors, which can be exchanged for rewards or privileges. This system helps individuals understand the connection between their actions and consequences, encourages goal-setting and self-monitoring, and reinforces positive behaviors consistently. Token economy systems can be particularly effective in educational settings, such as classrooms or therapy sessions, to promote and maintain appropriate behaviors.
These strategies can be utilized to support Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in educational settings. PBIS is a proactive approach to behavior management that focuses on creating a positive school culture, teaching and reinforcing expected behaviors, and providing support for students to succeed academically and socially. Positive reinforcement and token economy systems align with the core principles of PBIS by emphasizing the importance of promoting positive behaviors, establishing clear expectations, and implementing consistent reinforcement strategies.
By incorporating positive reinforcement and token economy systems into a PBIS framework, educators can effectively manage behavior issues, create a positive and inclusive learning environment, and support the social-emotional development of students. These strategies help to reinforce positive behaviors, teach appropriate social skills, and reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviors, ultimately contributing to the overall success and well-being of students in educational settings.
