Languages are an important part of our existence and yet, they are increasingly under threat. Studies show that by the end of this century, over 6000 languages spoken today will have disappeared. Why do languages matter? Why should we care about preserving languages in our globalized world?
Building on the knowledge you acquired in Unit 2 (PDF attached), write a three-part reflective response on:
1.Global dimension. Which countries have taken successful measures at language preservation or saving a threatened or “endangered” language? Pick at least two examples.
2.National dimension. What is the UAE doing about preserving Arabic? What are the remaining challenges and creative solutions you can think of?
3.Self-reflection. How does this relate to you individually? How will you preserve your language? Does it matter?
