A. Description
 The term project for the Managerial Leadership course is an individual paper work which is required to be submitted at the end of the term. The paper will allow you to explore areas of Managerial Leadership in more detail and learn about the practical implementation of personal leadership qualities.
 The Project consists of two Parts:
PART I: Leadership Qualities – Personal Reflection
Imagine you are a school principal who is leading a school. In 3 pages (Arial, Font 12, 1.5 Spacing), and from the chapters and topics we covered in class, talk about 10 leadership qualities you will have as a school principal giving examples on how you will be implementing each of these qualities within the school. This paper should be your own reflection on what you believe a leader should be and how you believe a leader should act. In your examples, you may give specific examples related to leading a school. You may use some of the personal leadership qualities discussed in chapter 1 or you may choose other qualities from other chapters as you wish. All 10 qualities you choose must be from the chapters we cover in this course. Choose the qualities with passion and an intention to discover the leader within yourself. In other words, after what you have studied in this course, list the qualities you feel you want to have as a leader and live up to it citing examples on how you will put the qualities into action.
PART II: Interview With A Leader
You will choose a leader to interview. This leader can be a friend, co-worker, supervisor, family member who holds a type of leadership position. In your interview, you should learn from the leader his/her thoughts on managing subordinates, managing naysayers (those who object to leader’s actions, ideas and decisions), motivating them and making decisions that impact other members in the organization. You will need to identify who you interviewed (i.e name, position held, organization in which he/she is employed. In 2 pages (Arial, Font 12, 1.5 Spacing), , write a paper about the most important things you have learned from the leader you interviewed in terms of leadership styles, qualities, advice and tips. Use information from your conversation with the leader to support your writing. This assignment is intended to test your understanding of important concepts and discover how to sharpen your intellectual skills of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and application.

The Project is worth 10% of the total course mark; 5% for each part. There is no
presentation required for this paper.
C. Format
 Your term project should be no more than 6 pages and no less than 5 pages excluding the
cover page using an ‘Arial’ Font of size 12 and a 1.5 spacing. It should include:
1) Cover page which includes your Name, Course Name and Code, Lecturer Name,
Department and University Name, Date of Submission
2) The main information on your topic with proper titles and subtitles where
necessary.
3) References Page to include any references you used including people you
interviewed and websites you may have visited.
D. Due Date
 Projects should all be submitted on April 13th. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Part I: Leadership Qualities – Personal Reflection

Running an educational institution requires an effective leadership structure that is well organized from the top administrative level down to that of students. As a school principal, my vision is to provide effective leadership with the objective of ensuring that all day-to-day activities are undertaken in an effective manner, such that everyone will have an opportunity to pursue long-term success (Brusher, 2006). As an educational leader, the ten leadership skills that I will be implementing include: communication skills, self-confidence, emotionally intelligence, motivation, trust, resilience, visionary approach, community-building efforts, visibility, and inclusion.

Communication Skills

The ability to communicate an idea or directive to students, teachers, and staff in an effective manner is an important leadership quality for a school principal. I intend to learn ways of persuading students and staff to follow the appropriate educational guidelines through firm expressions interspersed with humor as a way of attracting their attention. It is important for followers to understand the message that is being communicated by the leader. For example, I will be communicating not only with those present in school, but also to parents regarding the future of the school in terms of performance targets and planned development projects. In this way, communication will become a two-way process in which I will not only be providing directives but also getting feedback from students, teachers, parents, and other school workers.

Self-Confidence

An effective school leader is able to demonstrate self-confidence in front of students and teachers. Confidence, self-awareness, and self-acceptance will enable me to demonstrate my core morals, ideologies, and ethical systems in my leadership style. My objective will be to ensure that my followers detect an element of genuineness and credibility in my leadership. This will be an important step in my efforts to become an authentic leader. Once I exhibit confidence, students will begin to associate with me proudly. Moreover, as their role model, I will be able to influence them to gain confidence in their abilities.

Emotionally Intelligence

The education arena has become challenging field where a high level of emotional intelligence is a key requirement particularly for school principals. As a school leader, I will always be keen to understand students’ emotions and how administrators respond to them. Leadership is not just about giving directions; it is also about showing compassion to the students and the staff members who are going through emotional strain. Therefore, an effective school leader must understand the different components of an individual’s emotional make-up. Moreover, he/she should understand the role of peer influence in determining emotional responses among students. As a school principal, I will always focus on creating awareness on the need to be sensitive to the emotional needs of students with special needs, for example, those with learning disabilities.

Motivation

The true measure of an effective school leader is the ability to motivate people to become effective, ethical, and self-directed individuals. It is through motivation that a leader is able to elevate people from current positions to improved ones. For this reason, I will work hard to motivate students to excel in academics and to uncover their creative abilities, talents, and entrepreneurship skills. In so doing, my objective will be to encourage them to search for solutions to common challenges facing humanity. As their leader, I will motivate students to excel in both academic and non-academic activities.

Trust

A school principal acts as a link between the students, staff, teachers, and parents. For this reason, I will work hard to build trust with all stakeholders in my school. My main area of focus will involve balancing loyalties in order not to appear to favor one party during disputes or in the allocation of resources. To develop trust, I will seek views from all stakeholders before introducing new regulations or starting a new development project in the school.

Resilience

One of the most crucial duties of a school principal is to make decisions quickly in order to resolve various matters whenever they arise. An effective leader should be able to evaluate the challenges and success factors surrounding a decision before giving directions. Making an appropriate decision will lead to long-term positive effects on the school. Thus, an effective school principal should learn to remain resilient by sticking to his decisions even in the face of stiff opposition from some of the stakeholders. For this reason, I will work hard to become a resilient leader. However, I will also accept to take responsibility for organizational failure in any unfortunate situations where my decisions will lead to negative consequences.

Visionary Approach

All school administrators should be visionary and futuristic in their approach to leadership. This trait majorly depends on self-confidence and the professional knowledge that one has acquired. It is for this reason that I will endeavor to remain aware of current trends in education and leadership while still learning about new skills and strategies of motivating my followers. In this way, I will have substantial knowledge to share with students, staff, and parents. By organizing seminars with the aim of sharing this knowledge, I will not only be inspiring students but also enhancing my credibility as a leader.

Community-Building Efforts

Educational institutions have the responsibility to promote social welfare and community development. As a school leader, I will introduce initiatives for student participation in community development. These efforts will go a long way in teaching them to become responsible adults and community leaders. Moreover, social welfare has long-term economic and political benefits which manifest themselves in terms of enhanced school-community relations. To achieve this goal, I will organize development activities through which students and teachers will be working together with members of the local community as a team in efforts to achieve common goals.

Visibility

For a school principal to be effective in terms of leadership, he/she must be visible to all students, staff members, and school community. This means that he/she should adopt a proactive approach to problem-solving and day-to-day management-related activities of the school. To succeed in this regard, I will maintain a high level of visibility in all areas of the school. I will be interacting as much as possible with various students, teachers, parents, and other school administrators in order to appear to be pursuing the school’s development objectives like everybody else.

Inclusion

Lastly, I will be working hard to promote inclusion across the school. An effective school leader is one who creates an environment for a coordinated approach to leadership development at all levels within the institution. To achieve this goal, I will develop a sense of patriotism and ownership among all students and staff by creating platforms that enable them to participate in the day-to-day decision-making processes.

Part II: Interview with a Leader

Apart from identifying the leadership qualities that one should possess to succeed in a certain job, it is also imperative to examine the perspectives that other people have adopted in their jobs. For this reason, I decided to interview my friend Victor Smith who runs a small software security company. As the interview started, I was fascinated by the manner in which he adopted a professional tone. It is as if he did not want our friendship to influence the way he responded to my questions.

To begin with, I wanted to know the type of leadership that he uses at his company. He told me that he has adopted a blend of transactional, transformational, laissez-faire, and authoritarian styles. Moreover, he explained how he initially struggled to identify a leadership style that was best suited to his business model. When he started the company, most of the employees were his friends and acquaintances. Later on, he understood the importance of integrating these styles into one comprehensive leadership package that could allow the kind of flexibility that was needed in the startup (Glanz, 2002). Smith reiterated the importance of identifying and outlining one’s business model before choosing a leadership style. He informed me that the leadership strategy has greatly contributed to employee motivation.

Furthermore, Smith said that his leadership style has been enhanced by the continuous learning environment that has been created at his company. In his view, the learning process enables employees to perform their roles with ease while challenging them to acquire new skills. According to him, this is the reason his employees have become highly motivated professionals who are self-driven and competitive in their quest for excellence at both individual and team capacities.

Moreover, I noted that the communication pathway created between my friend and his employees was remarkable, and has yielded great results within the short time (three years) that the start-up has been operational. Smith reiterated that he allows employees to express their opinions directly and indirectly through informal interactions and participation in decision-making respectively. Since the company’s activities are highly technical and mechanical, open communication has ensured fast progress of their projects and high quality of products. However, it is sometimes important for one to exercise authoritarian leadership in order to assert one’s stature as the head of the company, said Smith. In his view, leaders should exercise authority by acting as the ultimate determiners of the responsibilities that should be assigned to each employee, their opinions notwithstanding.

Towards the end of the interview, Smith lamented that start-up companies normally face challenges in terms of funding from venture capitalists. According to him, the solution to this challenge is to remain confident and to focus on quality improvement in order to create a competitive brand. He plans to develop the company into a unique brand that is founded on transparency and excellent customer relations in order to attract many investors. The main lesson to be learned from this interview is that the leadership style that one adopts varies depending on the nature of business. Nevertheless, there are certain underlying principles that define effectiveness in leadership in all situations, and some of them include continuous learning, focus, self-confidence, authenticity, and inclusivity in decision-making.
