Explain the difference between a grand theory and a middle range theory
Answer
The Difference between a Grand Theory and a Middle Range Theory
Nursing theories provide a framework for nurses, both in practice and research, to be able to acquire as much knowledge as they can so that they can improve the care of all their patients. They also make it easier for nurses to make informed decisions regarding the path that they ought to take when faced with different situations. Nursing theories can be categorized into two: grand theories and middle-range theories.
A grand theory is very broad theory that provides a framework on how to structure ideas and present general propositions as well as concepts. Due to its broad nature, it does not support empirical testing. However, the concepts presented under this category can be useful to empirical testing. Grand theory generally provides a basis of practice, and serves to clearly differentiate the discipline of nursing from that of the medical model (Im, 2015). One of the well-known grand theories is King’s theory of goal attainment.
A middle range theory, on the other hand, is much narrower in scope. Additionally, it has fewer concepts, and serves as the bridge between grand theory and nursing practice. It is also less abstract and easily applicable to practice when it comes to explanation and implementation (Davydov, 2014). Unlike a grand theory, a middle range theory can be used for empirical testing. Some concepts include self-transcendence and maternal role-attainment.
Although grand theories and middle range theories are different in certain ways, they serve the same purpose. That is, they offer a great framework for the scope of the nursing practice. Therefore, it is imperative that both theories are used in a supplementary manner in order to achieve better results with regard to improving the quality of healthcare.
