Answer
Types of dances
Dancing is a universal activity that cuts across all cultures, races, and ethnic groups. It is a popular way of expressing oneself through movement. It can also be used for exercises such as Zumba dances, social interaction, or entertainment. Different types of dances vary depending on their movement repertoire, choreography, place of origin, and historical period. Late last year, my friends and I attended a great dance concert dubbed “Dance of the Decade concert” which had a compilation of different dancing types which I will describe in this paper.
The first dance performance that we watched was “Madie’s Big Backyard BBQ”, and it was quite interesting. Judging from the dancers’ movement and their cowboy clothesto the TuttiFrutti tune, it was evident that the dance was aimed at telling their magnificent story. The dancers stamped out the rhythms using detailed movements of the face and hands and their bare feet to narrate their beautiful story. I loved their lively performance especially how they began their dance to the opening cry of a-wop-bop-a-loo-bop-a-wop-bam-boom.They had a seamless transition from swinging to folk dancing and later jumping.
The next on stage was “sin metal trance” music. The dancers were jumping while rolling their bodies and were a little seductive. They also incorporated hip-hop like dances with exciting and trendy movements that made the performance an interesting one to watch.
The third dance we watched was“Room # 9” which took place at Stiletto Hotel. The dance was quite lovely as it entailed some form of ballet dance leaping around and twirling. The ending of the performance entailed the dancers standing in a semi-circle in an acrobatic fashion that was appreciated by the audience with a standing ovation.
My most memorable dance style was “Lively Art” which was an African dance. Dressed in different colors like a rainbow, the dancers did a splendid job as it entailed lots of jumping, hip movements, break dancing, leaping and pulsating which made it seem like disco dancing. The movements were indeed athletic and energetic so much that at one point, I was almost carried by the dance to the extent of wanting to stand up and dance.
The “Universal Motion” dance which is a modern type of dance was also presented. It just a moderate dance that lacked the thrill that rocked the preceding dances. The dancers were a bit gloomy with none smiling, making it a dull dance. Their movements, however, were at times interesting to watch and seemed to have been well-rehearsed even though they lacked in creativity.
The “Opolemos don flyon” dance was also a great dance as it took us back to the medieval times. The dancers wore traditional costumes such as skirts and feathers which made them look like tribal chiefs or kings. While dancing, two of the dancers would play traditional music instruments such as drums and flutes melodically, and this made the performance quite dynamic and lively. .
The “timelapse” dance was a terrific dance in which the dancers told a story with their dance moves. With Beyonce’s song “Freedom” bellowing from the speakers, the dance movements looked like slaves trying to escape from a certain prison and struggling to gain freedom.
The “dream” dance was the only performance which I struggled to understand and follow. Though the dancers seemed to have rehearsed well afore, the music, movements, costumes and prop was somehow incomprehensible. The dancers had expressionless faces which even made the dance complicated.
The “utake a step” tribal-type dance was beautiful because it projected immense happiness. Judging from the look on their faces, the dancers who wore Jamaican colors, gold accessories, bells and head bands seemed to be enjoying themselves. They also played the saxophone a lot.
The “runways dance” was a sad piece that was set to a well-known song composed by numerous artists titled “We are the World”. It was bit disturbing to watch as the dancers tell a story about a bunch of homeless people dancing near the trash. The dancers looked sad and were running all over the stage looking for food in a ballet-like dance. They used dramatic movements and facial expressions which augured well with the lyrics of the world.
The “Vencer el Mal dance” was a beautiful dance comprising seven performers dancing to a Spanish song which, though I could not understand, the lyrics had a nice tune. At first three girls dressed in pink ballet costumes joined the stage and did some gimmicks before being joined by four other dancers who were dressed in red costumes who did the cha chacha dance with a little tap. Although the dance moves were well rehearsed, I felt that the performance would have been better if the music could have played faster to lend more energy to the performance.
The “in between” dance was a great dance that encompassed well-rehearsed danced moves which entailed the use of chairs. The dancers wore appropriate costumes and running shoes which allowed them to jump and run around the stage. At the far end of the stage, sat their fellow dancer who was beating the drum in a repetitive and melodious mannerthat helped depict the momentum.
The last dance we watched was ‘remember the time’ which was a tribute to Michael Jackson. Indeed, the events planners saved the best for last. The performers danced to Michael Jackson’s collection of music and his epic dance styles: the moon walk, marching, gliding and sliding on the ground with lots of energy. The dancers wore costumes that consisted of black trousers, white shirts and suspenders with black hats that complete the MJ look making the piece very entertaining to watch. In fact, one could feel the presence and spirit of Michael Jackson roving in the concert hall.
In a nutshell, dancing is an important social activity that not only unites people in society but also helps them explain their individuality and their beliefs. The Dance of the Decade concert was a great time investment for me. Overall, the dances were successful in presenting well-choreographed moves that were not only entertaining but also educative.
