Training Evaluation: Measures of Success
Why I Chose the Article
The article is significant to me because it emphasizes the importance of evaluation in the training process. According to Paul Smith (2018), the training process if a four-step process that includes identification of a gap through needs analysis, designing training, implementation, and finally evaluation. In most cases, trainers will focus on the first three aspects of training while ignoring the fourth step. Training is incomplete without evaluation as the trainer will not be able to establish whether the training need has been accomplished. Evaluation is a process that has to commence at the beginning of training. The article is compelling because it emphasizes the need for trainers to have clear learning objectives at the beginning of the training process (Smith, 2018). A statement of purpose outlines how the training will benefit an organization. Besides, it forms a basis for evaluating the workers that are being trained. The evaluation step cannot be fulfilled unless the first three steps have been clearly defined. A comprehensive evaluation process captures feedback from the trainees as well as the view of the managers on how the organization has benefited from the training.
The article is also important because it enumerates the critical practical measures that can be utilized to make the evaluation process more successful. The practical measures have been presented in the form of question and they include: Do the courses present clear objectives? Have the right trainers been incorporated? Is the admin clear on his/her communication? Has evaluation been incorporated throughout the training process? Does the design of the course as well as its delivery reflect the effectiveness of research for the training? (Smith, 2018) Is the training being delivered in the right environment? and Are the external trainers delivering most (Smith, 2018)? An evaluation process that considers all these practical measures is effective in determining whether the training needs have been met.
Lesson Learned
One important lesson that I learned from reading the article is that the evaluation starts from the first step of training. Previously, I have considered training as the end process of the training program. However, the article has helped to inform me that a consideration of the other initial steps of the process are also important because the buildup one each other to make the evaluation process worthwhile and effective.
How the Article Relates to a Chapter in the Book
The article talks about the training evaluation process that is captured in chapter six of the book. Just like in the article, the chapter provides that training evaluation is important in the determination of the training outcomes (Noe, 2017). There is information that needs to be gathered to help in the provision of data that will be used to determine the effectiveness of the training program. The information can be equated to the project measures that are mentioned in the article. An effective training should bring changes in the organization in terms of turnover, productivity, employee relations, organizational culture, or communication. Organizations invest a lot of money in the training of their employees hence the need to determine their effectiveness and impact to the organizational processes. A company has to determine the objectives of training for it to come up with the training outcomes that will be measured after the completion of the training process. Training evaluation is an important aspect the training process hence should not be ignored.
