Answer
Leadership involves directing people towards a common goal. In nursing, leaders play a significant role in ensuring patient safety. They are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the nurses who answer to them deliver quality medical service to the patients an act which should be done effectively without errors. However, errors occur in the field and some patients die. The role of the nursing leaders is to demonstrate transformational leadership in directing the nurses to achieve the jointly held goal of patient safety. This can be done through changing the culture of the hospital towards one which aims to ensure patient safety. Nursing leaders could also coordinate training for nurses to educate them on the importance of being careful in providing medical procedures which will ensure patient safety.
In response to Allyn’s post on the medical errors that occur in nursing, the question that arises is: will refusal by Medicaid to pay for medical errors lead to a drastic reduction in the number of Americans dying every year from these avoidable cause? The extent of reduction will depend largely on the effectiveness of the preventive measures being put in place by health care providers today.
After reading the posting by Dianne, I am disturbed by the increase in deaths attributed to avoidable medical errors from 98,000 to an estimated 400,000 annually between 2000 and 2015. However, a critical analysis of the information provided reveals that there is a sense in which a lot of hope is manifested in the improvements being made in health care settings with a view to address this problem. I conclude by asserting that I fully the idea of introducing best practice programs across all health care facilities in the United States.
