Questions
How can we focus on the positive benefits of change instead of the negatives? How can we let God help us to focus on the good, and how can we help others in our organization to think about such things?
Answer
Positivity
It is a known fact that change can bring both negative and positive outcomes in equal measure. As a leader, it is imperative to understand the foreseeable and familiar sources of resistance and formulate sound strategies to counteract them (Kanter, 2012). Therefore, the first step in focusing on the positive benefits of change is identifying the probable sources of resistance and proceeding to find appropriate solutions. By doing so, one can tackle each situation that arises without jeopardizing the position and performance of the organization.
Secondly, it is vital for a leader of change to obtain feedback from resistors (Kanter, 2012). This is primarily because this input can be very crucial in improving the process of achieving acceptance for change and having a new positive outlook on things. In fact, this feedback can help to define a unique perspective for an organization whereby all individuals have a similar point of view and can thus work together as a unit. Finally, it is equally important to weigh the pros and cons of the proposed changes. In a scenario where the pros far outweigh the cons, individuals working in the organization feel more at ease and reassured and are more willing to embrace the change. Kanter (2012) asserts that individuals are more likely to resist change if they feel vulnerable and uncertain about its outcome. Thus, leaders should create an ambiance of certainty with concise and straightforward steps. Moreover, they should invite individuals to take part in the change process to give them a sense of ownership and involvement (Kanter, 2012). On the other hand, workers should perceive change as an opportunity for personal growth, improvement, and reinforcement of life values.
Furthermore, for us to focus on the positive, we should learn to let go and let God take control of our lives. Change is a process that brings about a lot of uncertainty about what the future will unveil. As human beings, we love being in control of things around us. However, change interferes with this autonomy and can make us feel like we have lost a grip on the situation (Kanter, 2012). Trusting in God helps everyone, including those in our organization, to surrender control of all things, especially the unknown (Hawkins, 2013). Consequently, one feels comfortable and at ease to embrace the positive benefits of change. To help our colleagues, we can engage in group sessions to share our fears, confide in each other and hold prayers.
