- Radiations from the gadgets have been implicated in cancer development, while transport authorities have linked the use of mobile phones to increased accident incidences.

Good morning everyone. I am here to deliver a speech on the use of cell phones while driving. Cell phones play an important role in today’s society as they act as a tool for various purposes with the main use being communication. Communication could be in terms of phone calls, video chats, and messaging. Social media has greatly contributed to the increase in the use of cell phones. However, there are negative sides of cellphone use, such as cancer which results from exposure to radiation. Another negative side effect of using cell phones is the increase in road accidents due to the use of cell phones when one is driving (Tedesco, 2014). I want to talk about the latter effect, and my argument is that that cell phone use while driving should be illegalized.
Multitasking contributes greatly to road accidents. A person who multitasks rarely perform all the tasks involved in an equally effective manner. When drivers multitask, they lose concentration, and therefore road accidents occur. In addition to this, some of the drivers use one hand to operate the cell phone and the other hand to drive. Such an action involves use of anti- parallel forces. The use of the hands-free mode jeopardizes the safety of the driver as well as that of the passenger due to reduced concentration (Ontario Ministry of Transportation, 2015).
Next, traffic rules are vital in ensuring road safety. Use of cell phones while driving leads to disregard of traffic rules. Cell phones limit the ability to notice vital traffic information. The driver may also be inattentive to observe the rear mirror as well as other objects. Failure to observe the environment, for example road obstacles and a sign showing a turn may lead to occurrence of an accident (Strayer & Drew, 2007).
Ladies and gentlemen, there are other instances where a driver may be talking to a passenger while simultaneously talking on phone. The inherent differences in sound qualities from these communication sources may affect the driver’s concentration. In addition to this, phone calls require intensive cognitive as well as mental demands as one strains to understand what the other person is saying and at the same time driving. Direct communication has the self- regulation element due to contact between the individuals. Moreover, the individuals can read the mood and tone of the other person easily without straining. Cell phone communication on the other hand is a form of indirect communication. Therefore, it lacks the self –regulation aspect due to the distance between the two individuals. Driving while making a call is therefore a dangerous action that puts the life of both the driver and the passenger (s) at risk.
For these reasons, I think the introduction of laws that prohibit the use of cell phones while driving is an important milestone in reducing the number of road accidents that occur. Such an action will go a long way in limiting the probability of road accidents. In addition to this, the laws will go a long way in promoting the psychological wellbeing of drivers.
As I conclude, I want to reiterate that cell phones are vital in ensuring that day-to-day activities are carried out effectively in the modern world. Their role in communication should not be overlooked. However, it is also important that drivers learn how to manage day-to-day distractions that come with cell phone use. Unfortunately, the temptation to talk while behind the wheel is too much of a temptation for most drivers, hence the need to impose legal sanctions on cell phone use while driving by simply illegalizing it. This action will lead to increased concentration while driving and a drastic reduction in the number of accidents.
